Obviously, this "new" technology has revolutionized our hobby. With the innovation in the past few years of the DSM on 2.4Ghz by Spektrum, and it's strong success with car users, and it's predecessor the DX6, this radio represents the next "real" innovation in remote-control technology and reliability.
It is a highly-affordable solution to "shoot downs", which is probably the 90% reason folks are buying this radio. Unlike 72mhz setups, where a "pin" or "channel" was required, and frequently conflicted at crowded RC sites, it was possible for others on the same channel to power up their transmitter while YOURS was on, and result in loss of control. This is the hated "shoot down".
Spektrum DSM2 technology, on 2.4Ghz, eliminates this risk, as by FCC regulation, the DX 7 transmitter may not START emitting RF energy until it finds channels that are vacant within the 80 channels available. At that moment, YOUR transmitter "grabs" two channels, and starts emitting RF, which your RECEIVER then "locks on" to, because it is listening for a unique "GUID" global identifier code that each transmitter has when built. In addition, the RX "remembers" which model it is supposed to be receiving, and checks for THAT code from the TX when first turned on.
For us, this means several very valuable things, but most significant, I think, is that it means "MY" transmitter and receiver are locked together on a channel-pair that NO ONE ELSE within RF reception range of my transmitter can OCCUPY!!!! Whether it is a cell phone, wireless network, wireless video, or anything else, by FCC rule, it must NOT be able to emit RF on an occupied channel.
Think about that. When we turn on our DX 7, and the RX locks on - at that moment - (until the TX is powered OFF) - we quite literally have "our OWN" channel that is OURS. NOBODY else. Think about that!!!!
